HESTA's board

The board meets 10 times a year, managing every aspect of the Fund’s responsibilities and overseeing the administration, investments and future direction of HESTA.



Angela Emslie - appointed 15.12.94

Angela Emslie is chair. Angela is an employer trustee nominated by the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI). She has significant experience as a trustee of industry superannuation funds and in addition to her role on the HESTA board, she is a Director of three other funds: Vision Super, VicSuper and Care Super.

Angela is also an elected board member of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) and a former trustee of AusFund.

With over 20 years experience in management as a senior manager, a line manager and an adviser to management, Angela has extensive experience in a vast range of management and human resource issues. Angela is a Director of LIME Management Group, a boutique consulting firm that provides management consulting services primarily to the health, community services and government sectors. She provides strategic planning and management advice particularly in organisational change and development.

Angela has a Masters in Business Management and a Bachelor of Economics.

Glenn Bunney - appointed 01.01.07

Glenn Bunney

Glenn has an extensive management background across a range of service industries, both industrial and consumer. He has held CEO positions for more than 22 years, the last 11 of which have been aged and health care related. He is currently the CEO of Sundale, a Queensland community based organisation operating community and residential aged care, rehabilitation services (including a private rehabilitation hospital), childcare and retirement living based on the Sunshine Coast and Kilcoy.

Glenn continues to represent the aged care industry as a Director of Aged Care Queensland Inc. (President 2000 – 2003), and was a former Director and National President (2003 - 2007) of Aged & Community Services Australia, and has been directly involved with forums including the National Aged Care Alliance and the Aged Care Industry Council. He has been a Director of the International Homes and Services for the Ageing since 2003 and is currently on the Executive.

Glenn holds a Bachelor of Business Degree, as well as a range of experience and qualifications in quality management systems, at one stage holding the position of Chair of the Australian Association of Certification Bodies. He has a passionate interest in the future services needed for older Australians and how we might best respond to their aspirations and needs, with a particular interest in assistive technology and its potential applications. Glenn is also extremely interested in how we can increase superannuation savings for our members in the aged and health care industries.

Rob Elliott - appointed 21.11.97

Rob Elliott is an adviser to the Health Services Union (HSU and is the past National Secretary of the HSU . Rob worked as a lawyer before joining the HSU in 1987 as a Research Officer, then Senior Industrial Officer (Industrial Advocate).

He has degrees in political science and law and a Master of Laws degree from the University of Melbourne specialising in corporations and securities law. He is continuing research - in Australia and France - into the contrasting treatment of `human capital' under anglo-american and european company law.

Rob is married with two daughters. His wife, Kaye, is a Victorian MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Rural and Regional Development. Rob's main past-times are bush walking, running, skiing and Manchester United.

Donald Good - appointed 16.11.89

Don has a degree in Commerce and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

On graduating from university he worked with an international accounting firm for 8 years in Perth and Sydney. He specialised in auditing and business consulting. He moved to the Health Industry in 1977 and undertook a number of roles with St John of God Health Care. He left the role of National Director of Corporate Services in December, 1999. In this role he was directly responsible for the financial management, information systems, legal, risk management, human resources, industrial relations and centralised supply functions of the group.

Don currently is Chairman of Trustees of St John of God Health Care, a Governor and Director of the University of Notre Dame Australia, a director of St John of God Foundation and St John of God Australia Ltd, a director of Frontier Investment Consulting Pty Ltd and is a financial advisor to the Sisters of St John of God. In the past he has held a number of other appointments in the health and aged care industry.

Don is married with three adult sons and enjoys golf and fishing.

Denis Hogg AM - appointed 20.12.05

Denis recently retired as Chief Executive of Epworth Healthcare, a position he held for the past 20 years.

As a member of the Board, and past president of the APHA and past Chairman of the Church and Charitable Private Hospitals Association, he was extensively involved in industry matters relating to the private hospital sector. Denis was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the Private Hospital industry.

As Chief Executive of Epworth, he was responsible for the growth of the organization from a single campus to a 5 campus facility. The recently opened Epworth Eastern is considered to be the most advanced private hospital in Australia.

Since his retirement, Denis has remained active in industry affairs, sitting on a number of Boards with ties to the Health Industry.

Denis holds degrees in Science, Commerce and Business Administration, is married to Joy and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. He is a passionate Hawthorn supporter and has recently completed a 9 year term as a Director of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Brett Holmes - appointed 28.9.00

Brett is General Secretary of the New South Wales Nurses' Association(NSWNA) and Branch Secretary of the Australian Nursing Federation (NSW Branch). The role of the General Secretary involves representing the Association's 51,000 members in industrial, political and professional forums. The General Secretary’s role includes the financial and operational management of the Association.

The General Secretary is a member of the Council of the NSWNA. Brett is an Executive member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Unions NSW and the Australian Nursing Federation.

Brett is a graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union Training Program in 2001.

Kathy Jackson - reappointed 10.03.09

Kathy Jackson is National Secretary of the Health Services Union (HSU). Prior to this role she held the positions of State Secretary and Industrial Officer of the HSU (Victoria No. 3 Branch) – Australian Health Professional Association.

She completed a Bachelor of Education at Melbourne University. Kathy is a Member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) Executive.

 

Ged Kearney - appointed 01.04.04

Ged Kearney is the Federal Secretary of the Australian Nursing Federation. Her role at the Federal level encompasses the representation of nurses in a wide variety of national and international forums and dominions including acute and aged care, workforce planning, occupational health and safety, health care reform and professional development.

Prior to her current role, Ged was Federal President of the Australian Nursing Federation, and concurrently held the position of ANF Victorian Branch President. At that time she was also Manager of the Clinical Nursing Education Department at Austin Health.

She has a Bachelor of Education and is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Health.

Tim Lyons- appointed 08.02.10 

Tim Lyons

Tim is the Assistant Secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). Tim’s responsibilities as an ACTU Officer include management of the organising and growth agenda, union education programs and the corporate research/strategic campaigning capacity. Prior to the ACTU, Tim was an official of the National Union of Workers for 13 years, working as an industrial officer and organiser.

Tim represents the ACTU and unions at high-level meetings with government and business on both industrial issues and the broader policy agenda of Australian unions. He is a member of the National Workplace Relations Consultative Council, the Committee on Industrial Legislation, the Procurement Consultative Committee and the Global Unions Committee on Workers' Capital. Tim was previously a trustee director of another industry superannuation fund and is a current director of The Union Education Foundation.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) and a Diploma as a Company Director.

Beth Mohle - appointed 28.6.01

Beth is a Registered Nurse who trained at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and was employed in a medical ward there before commencing employment at the Queensland Nurses' Union as an organiser in 1990. Beth is currently the Assistant Secretary of the Queensland Nurses’ Union/ Queensland Branch of the Australian Nursing Federation where she has particular responsibility for strategic planning, risk management, health policy, education and research.

Beth is a member of the Queensland Council of Unions Executive and is Chair of the QCU’s International Solidarity Committee as well as being an active member of Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA.

Prior to entering nursing Beth obtained a BA (Humanities) from Griffith University in Brisbane and has a Graduate Certificate in Health Economics at Monash University. She also has certificate qualifications related to superannuation – ASFA 100 Certificate of Superannuation Management and ASFA 200 Trusteeship.

Beth is married and lives in Brisbane. She has a keen interest in the arts, in particular film and photography.

Maree O'Halloran- appointed 18.01.10 

Maree O'Halloran

Maree O'Halloran is the Director of the Welfare Rights Centre in NSW. She also practises as a solicitor at the Centre which specialises in Social Security law and provides free legal assistance. Maree serves on the Management Committee of the NSW Aged Rights Service in a voluntary capacity.

Maree was a Director of the NSW State Super SAS Trustee Corporation from 2002 to 2009. She is now on the Board of the Teachers Credit Union (NSW/ACT/WA) and was the President of the NSW Teachers Federation prior to her current role.

Prue Power - appointed 01.01.10 

Prue Power

Prue was appointed as the Executive Director of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) in July 2003. Prior to taking up this position, she was the Australian Medical Association’s Director of General Practice and e-Health (7 years). Prue has worked at AHHA previously in the role of Deputy Director (3 years). Former roles have included Adviser to the Commonwealth Minister for Health (3 years), Senior Officer Policy Development Division (Workforce) Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health (1 year) and Secretary of the Australian Nurses Federation ACT Branch (8 years). Prue trained as a nurse at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Prue has a Master of Population Health, ANU (1999). She is also qualified as an Arbitrator (University of Adelaide 2002) and Mediator (Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators 2001) and has a Corporate Directors’ Diploma (1999).

Prue has served on several Boards of Directors, including 5 years on the ACT Health Community Service Board. She is currently a member of the University of Canberra Council.

Kelly Shay - appointed 01.09.09

Kelly is the Assistant Secretary of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) WA Branch. The LHMU is Western Australia’s largest union with a largely female membership in areas such as child care workers, cleaners, gardeners, caretakers, hospital workers, aged carers, hospitality workers and education assistants. Kelly is responsible for all components of Unions involvement in the aged care, disability, childcare, private education industries as well as training and development.

In her 5 years at the LHMU, Kelly has also worked as a Lead Organiser responsible for the Private Health industries.

Prior to LHMU, Kelly worked as a Lead Organiser for Australian Council of Trade Unions, organised workers throughout North America as a International Lead Organiser for UNITE (Union of Needle trades, Industrial and Textile Employees) based in Toronto and as an Agency Organiser for Community & Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association.

Kelly is an active member of APHEDA and the National Aged Care Alliance.  

Tony Smith – reappointed 19.4.07

Before entering the residential aged care sector in 1984, Tony enjoyed a management career in Methods Engineering production planning, human resource development and workplace relations.

He is Managing Director of A J & B J Smith Pty Ltd., who have business interests in residential aged care, independent living accommodation and nursing homes management and advisory services.

From 1997 to November 2001, Tony was Federal President of ANHECA and joint chairperson of the National Aged Care Industry Council.

Tony is currently an aged care quality assessor registered with the Quality Society of Australasia and a member of the Administrators and Advisors Panels by ministerial appointment.
