Your obligations regarding the payment of superannuation on behalf of your employees are largely governed by:
- The Federal Government’s superannuation guarantee legislation
- Any awards and/or agreements covering your employees and
- The HESTA Trust Deed
HESTA employer obligations
1. Join HESTA by completing the employer details form
Joining HESTA is easy and free - all you need to do is complete an Employer details form and an employer number will be issued to you. Payments cannot be accepted by HESTA unless you have joined HESTA.
2. Advise employees that you will be disclosing to the Fund personal information necessary to administer their Fund membership
3. Make monthly payments
HESTA requires contributions on behalf of your employees to be made monthly. This is in the best interests of your employees, as it ensures they receive the correct return on their super, and helps maintain any disability and death insurance they have.
You are expected to pay your super contributions to HESTA by the 14th day of the month following the contribution month. This enables HESTA to apply contributions to member accounts and report this processing to you with your next contribution advice.
You can apply to make payments less frequently, but HESTA must agree to this in writing. Contact us for more information.
You are required by law to forward to HESTA by the 28th day of the next month any member after-tax contributions deducted for an employee's pay.
4. Advise HESTA of any changes to your business details
If any of your business details have changed (for example, business name, address, phone number or the name of the contact person responsible for administering super in your workplace), advise HESTA immediately to ensure easy administration of your super.
