Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP)
HESTA is required to transfer to the Australian Taxation Office any super held for a temporary resident who has left Australia for more than six months and whose visa has expired or been cancelled. This may affect your super if you are not an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident.
In accordance with government recognition of the difficulty in contacting people who have left Australia, we will not produce an Exit Benefit Statement in these circumstances. HESTA encourages members to obtain a PIN to gain online access to monitor their account.
After leaving Australia, eligible temporary residents can claim their super at any time from either:
- HESTA if the amount has not been transferred; or
- The ATO if the amount has been transferred.
The payment from HESTA or the ATO is called a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP). In most cases DASP payments will be subject to a 35% withholding tax.
For more information about the DASP visit www.ato.gov.au and search for DASP.
