HESTA's 2007/2008 return

After much recent share market volatility, HESTA’s Core Pool (where 90% of members have investments) has posted a return of -5.4%, its only negative annual return in the Fund’s 21-year history. The return still places HESTA in the top third of super funds across Australia.

Top nurses honoured at awards night gala dinner

Samantha Gibson from St John of God Hospital, Subiaco WA was named Australian Nurse of the Year. Professor Claire Rickard from Griffith University in Queensland took out the Innovation in Nursing Award and Melbourne’s Kelly Leiper won Graduate Nurse of the Year.

How members can boost their super

HESTA members are encouraged to give their super a free top-up through the Federal Government’s co-contribution scheme. If a member quali. es, the Government provides a co-contribution of up to $1.50 for each $1 of after-tax contributions.

Remind employees to check their insurance cover

Many Australians don’t have enough disability, death or income protection insurance. It’s not a cheery subject but insurance can lessen the hardship on a member’s family if the employee dies or suddenly loses their income.
Insurance through HESTA covers members for injury, illness or death anywhere, anytime – not just while they’re at work.

Default funds and choice of fund

If employees are eligible for choice and do not exercise it or fail to provide all the information that the employer needs to pay contributions to their chosen fund, then the employer must pay SG contributions to an employer nominated fund (also known as the default fund) even if the employee is currently a member of another fund.

Provision of Tax File Numbers (TFNs)

For new accounts opened after 1 July 2007, unless funds hold a member’s TFN, employer contributions (eg Award, Superannuation Guarantee or Salary Sacrifice) will be taxed at 46.5% (top marginal tax rate plus the Medicare Levy).
