With HESTA, you have automatic access to low cost, convenient and flexible life insurance and disability insurance

Eligible HESTA members automatically receive default cover If you are eligible when you join HESTA, you automatically receive default disability and death cover.

Your low cost monthly premium will simply be deducted directly from your super fund.

You also have the option to request to upgrade, reduce or cancel your default cover if it doesn’t meet your needs.

Who is eligible for insurance through HESTA?

Most new members are eligible for basic insurance cover. A detailed outline of conditions and eligibility can be found on page 10 of the Insurance Options guide.

Why disability and death cover is important

Your health and ability to earn an income are some of your most valuable assets. Without cover, you or your family may experience financial hardship if you die or suddenly become unable to work.

 

  • Disability cover helps you and your family be financially supported if you have to stop work due to illness or injury.
  • Death cover provides your dependants or estate with a lump‐sum payment if you die. This will help ease financial pressures at an already difficult time.

 

Why get your insurance through HESTA?

     

  • Low cost: Buying insurance through your super fund is often a cheaper way to get covered. At HESTA, we have access to bulk discounts and tax savings that we pass directly on to you.
  • Flexible: You can apply to change your insurance when your needs change
  • Convenient: Your cover will continue throughout your HESTA membership (unless your premiums are not paid or you cancel your cover). You won’t have to reapply for insurance each year.
  • Worry-free: Your insurance premiums will be deducted from your HESTA super account, even if you stop work. So as long as there’s enough money in your account to cover your premiums, you don’t have to remember to pay them.
  • Free cover for parental leave - You can enjoy up to 12 months free cover when you take parental leave — provided your HESTA employer notifies us before your leave commences, your leave meets the requirements of applicable award or industrial agreement and your cover hasn't otherwise ended.

How to upgrade your cover

Please download the Insurance Options guide to learn more about your cover options and how they impact your premiums.

To apply for an upgrade to your type or amount of cover, you can either:

1.  Login to Member Online (call 1800 813 327 to register) and select My Insurance from the dropdown menu in the login box.

OR 

 2.  Complete the personal health statement and application form at the back of the Insurance Options guide and post it to us for assessment.

How to reduce or cancel your cover

You have the flexibility to reduce or cancel your cover at any time. Simply send us your written, signed and dated instructions to do so. If you change your mind later, any future applications you make for cover will be subject to satisfactory medical evidence.
