HESTA announces Jeff Brunton as Head of Portfolio Management

HESTA has appointed Jeff Brunton as the new Head of Portfolio Management, further strengthening the Fund’s senior investment leadership as the organisation moves forward with its internalisation plans.

Chief Investment Officer (CIO) Sonya Sawtell-Rickson said the recruitment of strong talent was essential to support the implementation of the $62 billion industry fund’s investment strategy, which is this year prioritising the internalisation of its Australian Equities function followed by Fixed Interest and Cash.

“Our investment strategy is designed to deliver even stronger investment outcomes for members by improving the team’s capacity and capabilities while achieving cost efficiencies across a number of financial markets,” Ms Sawtell-Rickson said.

“Jeff brings a wealth of experience investing across a broad range of asset classes and leading direct asset management teams. His strong commercial acumen and real passion to drive investment outcomes for HESTA members is a fantastic addition to the team.”

Reporting to the CIO, Mr Brunton will lead internal and implemented teams across growth, defensive and unlisted asset classes, embedding the Fund’s total portfolio approach to investments.

Chief Executive Officer Debby Blakey said the challenging environment for super funds has meant strong resourcing and a commitment to innovation were critical to ensuring strong and sustainable returns for HESTA members.

“We must achieve the right blend of experience and capabilities in order to support the innovation and partnership needed to continue delivering long-term investment excellence,” Ms Blakey said.

“HESTA has a long and proud history of delivering strong financial outcomes for generations of our hard-working members. I’m delighted to welcome Jeff to the team as we move forward with our ambitious plans for growth.”

Mr Brunton was previously CIO at AMP Life. Following the separation and sale of the group’s life insurance business, he became Deputy CIO at Resolution Life where he was responsible for managing a significant multi-asset investment portfolio. He has held various roles at AMP Capital, including as Senior Investment Director and Head of Credit Markets. Previously he was Head of Global Credit at QIC.

“HESTA has demonstrated over many years a commitment to excellence in ‘bottom up’ portfolio management as part of its investment strategy,” Mr Brunton said.

“I’m looking forward to joining the HESTA team to support the Fund’s plans for strong investment growth and make a real difference to members’ retirement outcomes.”

Mr Brunton joins the Fund on 26 July 2021.
