cover through HESTA

Under new legislation called Putting Members' Interests First, from 1 April 2020, insurance will only be provided automatically to members that have had an account balance of $6,000 or more and are aged 25.

Changes to insurance fees from 1 April 2020

There have been significant changes to insurance cover through super due to recent Federal Government legislation. As a result, HESTA insurance fees are changing on 1 April 2020. Please click here for more information.

On 1 April 2020, members with a super balance that did not exceed $6,000 after 1 November 2019, may have lost their insurance cover through super. You can reinstate your cover by telling us before 30 June 2020.

Lost cover on 1 April 2020?

If your cover did not exceed $6,000 after 1 November, your cover will have ceased on 1 April 2020. It will recommence once your account balance has reached $6,000, you’re aged 25 or over and your account is not inactive. Any cover you receive in the future may be different to the cover you have now and may be subject to restrictions, such as New Events cover.

If you want insurance cover now, you can reinstate the same cover you had when it ceased on 1 April 2020, by telling us before 30 June 2020. See 'How do I get my cover back if it ceased on 1 April' below.

The cover you held before it ceased on 1 April 2020 will be reinstated back to 1 April 2020 if by 30 June 2020:

• you tell us you want cover back by 30 June 2020; or

• it automatically recommences when you meet the following criteria: are aged 25 or more, your balance has reached $6,000 and your account is not inactive.

Cover will be backdated to 1 April 2020 subject to paying insurance fees so you have no break in cover.

If your cover is not reinstated by 30 June 2020, you can still make an election for cover to start, however the cover that recommences after 30 June 2020 will be Standard Cover with New Events Cover restriction and recommence from the date of your election (or when you meet the automatic commencement criteria) subject to the following:

• for a HESTA member aged less than 55, the reinstated Standard Cover will be restricted to New Events Cover for 24 consecutive months; and

• for a HESTA Personal Super and HESTA members aged 55 or more, the reinstated Standard Cover will be restricted to New Events Cover.

You can apply for cover at anytime regardless of your age and balance. Go to your online account and select the 'Insurance' tab.

If you already chose to keep your insurance if you become ‘inactive’ under Protecting Your Super changes, you don’t need to do anything. You'll continue to be covered even though your super account balance may not have reached $6,000 between 1 November 2019 and 1 April 2020.

Not sure if you've already chosen to keep your insurance? That's OK. Just let us know you want to keep your cover. You can reinstate your cover you lost up until 30 June 2020.

Your cover will continue from 1 April 2020 because your account balance exceeded $6,000 on or after 1 November 2019.

How much insurance cover do I have?
