meet Kelleigh Allport

balance

Newcastle University medical student Kelleigh Allport has an advantage when it comes to providing healthcare to rural Aboriginal communities.

She herself is Aboriginal – her family comes from the Mudgee area – so she’s in tune with the cultural needs of Indigenous communities, making essential healthcare more accessible to them.

“My career goal is to return to rural communities to help address inequity in rural and Aboriginal health,” Kelleigh says.

Kelleigh is one of two Indigenous students to receive a HESTA scholarship which allowed her to attend the 14th National Rural Health Conference held in Cairns in April 2017.

“My career goal is to return to rural communities to help address inequity in rural and Aboriginal health.”

She was chosen from a host of medical, nursing and allied health students who belong to Rural Health Clubs affiliated with the National Rural Health Student Network.

At HESTA, we’re committed to increasing equity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. Of the 10 scholarships offered, at least one place was reserved for a student of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

The scholarship, delivered in partnership with Rural Health Workforce Australia (RHWA), covered the cost of flights, accommodation and registration for the four-day conference, giving students like Kelleigh an invaluable opportunity to hear from and network with current industry professionals.
