Lucas Chan is a HESTA Financial Planner in Melbourne.
Finance is in Lucas Chan’s blood. “I’ve come from an extended family of accountants and finance professionals. My grandfather was an accountant, my extended family were accountants and finance professionals and my mother was a stockbroker,” says Lucas.
“Family conversations frequently revolved around saving money, living within our means and investing appropriately. A career in finance seemed like the logical choice.”
Work that has impact
Lucas has worked in superannuation and financial planning for nearly eight years, and he’s been a financial planner for six of those. Helping people to understand their finances and enabling them to have options was a conscious career choice for Lucas. “When I was younger, I thought I was going to be an accountant like my grandfather, but I worried I would regret a 40-year career that was all about contributing to a company. So, I made the decision to help people to organise their finances and gain financial freedom instead,” says Lucas.
“I now feel fulfilled everyday knowing that my career will be spent helping people and their families.”
The importance of education
“For our members, their main concerns are often around making sure they have enough money to do the things they want to do in retirement,” says Lucas. “Many members can feel stressed or worried when it comes to their finances.
“By taking a step-by-step approach, I hope to show them that their finances can be simple, worry free and automated – which allows them to focus on the more important things in life.”
