Looking ahead

“While performance in any one year is pleasing, what really makes a difference to members’ retirement is strong, competitive, long-term returns,” Ms Sawtell-Rickson said. “While we’re very pleased with the track record of performance we’re delivering for members, we’re also looking to the future."

“We’re continuing to build capability and innovation across our investment team that’s going to allow us to keep delivering outstanding results for members.”

The fund is implementing an internalisation strategy, building out an Australian Equities team and looking to start bringing inhouse cash and fixed income management in 2022.

“Our ambitious investment strategy will build our direct investment capability while also giving us greater access to cutting-edge global investment thinking, helping us to deliver strong, competitive long-term investment returns and ensuring our members’ investments are well positioned for a dynamically changing world.”

Ms Sawtell-Rickson said - while there were strong market returns across many asset classes, particularly listed equities - unlisted asset classes also contributed to the results, despite the impact of the global pandemic.

Private equity, infrastructure and high yield credit performed well, and strong active returns were also generated across multiple asset classes, including equities, government bonds, credit, currency and through timely dynamic asset allocation decisions.
