Meet Gerry
When Gerry went along to a HESTA information session earlier this year, he didn’t expect it to have such a big impact on his plans for retirement.
Being engaged with her super throughout her career has allowed Jacqui to enjoy a retirement spending time with family and friends.
Jacqui has been a HESTA member for nearly 30 years. After a long career working in administration within the medical industry, she has only recently retired. “I’ve been retired since the middle of this year and have just returned from a three-month trip to Portugal, Croatia and Slovenia as well as visiting family and friends in the UK. I’m now project managing some long overdue renovations at home,” says Jacqui.
Planning ahead
Jacqui was able to maximise her super by making additional contributions throughout her working life. “A piece of advice that I have given to my two daughters is to take an interest in your super while you have time on your side. Make a commitment to salary sacrifice even a small amount each fortnight into your fund. You won’t notice the difference now but will reap the rewards when you retire,” says Jacqui.
Since 1990, Jacqui has felt she’s been in good hands with HESTA. “HESTA has always been very encouraging, helpful and supportive.”
What retirement means
Finally getting to the point of retirement means different things to different people. For Jacqui, it means having more time. “Retirement itself wasn’t something I’d always looked forward to, it was more that I was aiming for a less frantic time of my life and having time to enjoy the things we were doing at a slower pace,” says Jacqui.
“Retirement for me means time to do the things I’ve always wanted to, swimming lessons and feeding the ducks with my two-year-old granddaughter as well as planning more holidays with my husband.”
