You might have heard people talk about how important superannuation is for your future, but what exactly is it?
Here's what you need to know.
Superannuation or super is designed to help you save and invest money for your retirement.
While that might be a long time away for some, super works best when you add to it regularly throughout your working life.
So how does it work?
Your employer contributes a minimum amount to your super account. That's called the superannuation guarantee.
On top of this, you can make your own extra contributions.
Even a little bit extra can really add up over time.
You can choose how you want your money invested.
HESTA invests the money on your behalf.
Any earnings on your investments are applied to your super account.
Super can be one of the biggest investments you will make.
It's your money and taking an interest in it is one of the best things you can do to prepare for your financial future.
And the earlier you start boosting your super, the better your future will look.
A great thing you can do straight away is to register for an online account.
This is the easiest way to keep on top of your super, make contributions, and keep your contact information up to date.
We are a top-performing industry super fund in Australia and we invest in and for people who make our world better.
David Logan, HESTA Member Education Manager:
Starting a new job is exciting, especially when it's your first full-time job.
We are the industry super fund dedicated to people like you, people who make our world better.
Our purpose is to help you face the future with confidence, be a gutsy advocate for a fair and healthy community, and deliver investment excellence with impact so that you can live the retirement you deserve.
If you want a super fund that benefits members and cares about how your super is invested, we might be a great choice for you.
If you've had a job before, you may already have a super fund. These days, that fund will follow you from job to job, unless you choose a new fund.
If HESTA isn't already your fund, you can still choose us.
When you start your job, your employer will give you an ATO superannuation standard choice form.
It's important you choose a fund that's right for you.
To choose HESTA, complete this form and return it to your employer.
If you are already with HESTA, include your member number on this form.
You'll find this on any email from us.
If you don't make a choice, your employer will ask the ATO for the last super fund you contributed to.
If you don't have one, they'll pay your super into your employer's default fund.
Even though super is your money, many of us could benefit from checking in on it more often.
So if you are a HESTA member, make sure you register for an online account. This is the easiest way to keep in touch with your super at HESTA.
Once you have an online account set up, you can do lots of things like combine your super and set up additional contributions.
HESTA is about creating better futures for our members and we have a history of strong, long-term investment returns^.

This form helps your employees nominate their super fund. If HESTA isn’t already their fund, they can still choose us by completing this form and returning it to their employer.
If they don’t nominate a fund and they’ve never had a previous fund, we can create an account for them with HESTA.
