accessing your super

Super is your savings for your future, so there are some rules around when you can access it. Generally you need to wait until retirement, but you can access it sooner in limited circumstances.

early access to super

While everyone can access their super from age 65, if you’re younger you may still be eligible to access some or all of your funds in certain situations. Understand the options you have for accessing your super.

Financial hardship

Sometimes life can be extra difficult, and you need a little extra support. In periods of significant financial hardship that prevent you from meeting reasonable immediate expenses, you may be eligible to claim some of your super, or get income support from the government.

Compassionate grounds

If you need some extra help to afford medical expenses, home modifications or funeral costs, you may apply to access your super early on compassionate grounds. You’ll need to meet some specific conditions to qualify.

First Home Super Saver Scheme

Saving your first home deposit isn’t easy. But the Australian Government’s First Home Super Saver (FHSS) scheme could help you get there faster. You may choose to save towards your deposit by making voluntary before or after-tax contributions to your super.

Temporary residents

If you've worked in Australia on a temporary resident visa, you may be able to claim your super when you permanently leave the country — this is called a Departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP).

accessing super when you turn 60

Your preservation age is the age when you can generally start accessing your super. Right now, this is 60 years of age. At 60, you may still be working and boosting your balance, or you may be starting to wind down. Understanding how to make use of your super before full retirement can help you make the most of this period.

Transitioning to retirement

Over 60? A transition to retirement (TTR) income stream can help you boost your super balance for when you eventually retire. It can help you restructure the way you receive your income, receiving some from your super while you keep boosting your retirement savings.

Lump-sum withdrawals from your super

If you've quit or left a job on or after turning 60, you may be able to withdraw some or all of your super as a lump sum from your HESTA Super account — even if you're still working elsewhere or not fully retiring.

accessing super when you retire

There's no set retirement age in Australia, so generally you can decide when you retire — but the government has set rules on when you can access your super. There are also different ways you might use your super as income, depending on your circumstances.

Setting up retirement income

A HESTA Retirement Income Stream account allows you to access a regular income from your super while your money keeps working hard for you.

Lump-sum withdrawals from your income stream

With a HESTA Retirement Income Stream, you can make lump sum withdrawals on top of your regular payments. Please note: lump sum withdrawals aren't available for HESTA Transition to Retirement (TTR) accounts.
